Founded in 1917, the first Methodist church in Scotlandville was given the name Taylor Colored Methodist Episcopal Church after its first minister, the Reverend Amos M. Taylor (1918–1922). A few years later, the name was changed to Camphor Memorial after Bishop Camphor. Founding members are featured on pages 21–29. Twenty ministers have served Camphor, including Rev. Mary Ann Robinson and Pastor Clifton C. Conrad Sr. The 1936 photograph above shows the Camphor senior choir. Pictured are, from left to right, (first row) Emma Robinson, Leslie Browne, Edna Kelly, Mable Rowley, Edith Langston, and Alvin Eames; (second row) Janie McClain, Emma Beshears, Bertha Harrell, Pearl Lewis, Mary Butler, and Rosa Carter, pianist; (third row) Sherman Flanders, Simon Lewis, O.M. Amacker, Hartzel Bradford, and T.W. Langston, who served as director for 43 years. A music professor at Southern, Langston was the arranger of the university’s alma mater and fight song. The 1929 Sunday school class is pictured below. (Both, courtesy of Rhonda Crawford Stewart.)
